Joanne Conte, Podiatrist SUBJECT: Corns A Step Forward Footcare Q. What is a corn and how does it develop? A. A corn is an area of thickened skin on a toe. Medically it is known as a HELOMA DURUM. Corns usually develop on the top of a toe, where the toe bends or over a joint in the toe.

Friction between shoes and the skin on your toe causes the skin to 'hypertrophy' or become thickened, thus causing a corn. We can see then that corns usually develop on a toe that is bent or raised at the joint. This bend elevates the joint and puts more friction pressure on the skin. The bent toe is called a "HAMMERTOE." With time corns will continue to thicken and may become very painful. In short, corns or "Heloma Durum" are areas of thickened skin on a toe.

Corns occur most often on a bent toe or a "hammertoe" If you have any questions on foot health write me at: A Step Forward Footcare 280 No. Bedford 2G Mt.
