Is GS7 good pay? ›

As of Aug 27, 2024, the average hourly pay for a Gs 7 in California is $54.79 an hour. While ZipRecruiter is seeing salaries as high as $63.34 and as low as $36.06, the majority of Gs 7 salaries currently range between $42.69 (25th percentile) to $59.33 (75th percentile) in California.

That's because of an arbitrary pay cap that exists for General Schedule pay rates. Salaries of career GS employees, according to federal statute, cannot exceed the pay for political appointees and others at level IV on the Executive Schedule.

The traditional "entry level" grade within DCAA is the GS-7 level (some employees come in either at the lower GS-5 level or higher GS-9 or GS-11 levels) and the "career ladder" is GS-7 to GS-9 to GS-11 and finally to GS-12, with the employee expected to advance between grades after one year and to reach the GS-12 level ...

Within-grade step increases are based on an acceptable level of performance and longevity (waiting periods of 1 year at steps 1-3, 2 years at steps 4-6, and 3 years at steps 7-9). It normally takes 18 years to advance from step 1 to step 10 within a single GS grade if an employee remains in that single grade.
