Wife went to drop the kids off at school like she always does and then goes to the gym. Turned the car off and walked the kids in to their classrooms. Came back out and "no key detected". Quickly figured out someone opened her car andtook her purse in the 2-3 mins 100ft or so of drop off. She did not lock the car. What makes this situation not normal is she had her SS card in her wallet. Cant cry overspilt milk but I want to get ahead of this. The SS card and drivers license taken together I think adds a layer of possible identity theft. She had her health card, costco, AAA card and god knows what else in there.

I am going to freeze her credit. Cancel the debit, credit, and fuel card. Notify the bank etc.

I was going to sign up for one of the identity theft programs and whatever else is necessary. Figured I would post it here incase someone has some words of advice or has been down this road.

Of course they took the only keyfob to the car,so it's stuck at the school until the locksmith can come out later today and program a new one.

If you have proof of ownership the dealer should be able to make you a key.

Sometimes things happen, she must be pretty upset.

The SS card is what scares me the most...never been in that scenario, everything else is easy.

I'd contact the SS or look at their website to see what they say.

Hopefully this POS Criminal is a dipsh*tthat just wants the easy $$ and tosses everything else.

Wifes purse was stolen with SS Card in her wallet (7)Or lock the car, or take her purse with her, keys, or phone.... All great questions that as her loving husband decided to quickly move on from because the lesson has already been learned the hard way. Luckily her phone was in the dash and hard to see.

She had her SS card for work and never returned it to the safe.

You have bigger problems than a SS card.

They have keys to her car, keys to your house and the address.

Get the locksmith at the house change the locks, once you get the car running take it and have the FOB reprogrammed. Also if she had work keys and a business card in her purse and office keys on the ring, well they need to be changing stuff too.

I thought about this. Portable locksmith already deleted the old fob from the car. So I guess they could still open it, but it would set the alarm off. At home it’s in the garage. We don’t have any actual keys to the house. Each door has a keypad deadbolt that is web enabled. Giant pitbull, cameras, alarm, etc. They would need to be more then a petty theft. If I am home…. Good luck with that.

I will probably up some of my game though after this for the foreseeable future.

Worked with a guy up in Barstow back in 2005 who sold this service to damn near everybody up there. Seems like I remember there was a package for an annual fee vice the monthly fee.

Contact the Internal Revenue Service and add an Identity Protection PIN to your SS#, you will have to have this pin in order to file taxes.

Good idea to freeze credit and getting a monitoring service. Sounds like you have Costco, if you are an executive member they have a monitoring contract with Complete ID. That's what I use, and it tends to report issues quick.

We were hit big time, finally had to change all of our checking and savings accounts too. But ours was a Dark Web breach, so they had much more information.

Good luck

I will have her get the ID pin with IRS and look into the costco stuff. Thanks!

One other thing, add two-factor authentication to every account you can,it seems that most companies offer this now. You can also inform mostof these companies that you are a victimof identity thief, they can flag your accounts which requires them to obtain additional verification of your identity if there is any contact.

Thats one of my biggest fears from a time soak situation - I know those services protect you but its just the time and hassle.

A few weeks ago a friend left his "key ring" in the car in his driveway while he was inside grabbing lunch - Well someone "reached in" and took his keys

He had his toy hauler keys, gate key, garage door key, safe key, shop keys, and his Mom's house key.

Thats was expensive and a full days work just for a Key ring ... but identity stuff like your situation... thats action and watching out for 3 months - sorry ...

My boss has an old briefcase he keeps in his work truck kind of a catch all for paperwork. Doesn't really use it much for current items but still has it on the passenger seat. Well the work truck had to go into the dealership for a recall, so they gave him a rental. Last second he grabs the briefcase and throws the key ring with office & house keysinto the case as well as his wallet, a bad habit of his he has had for as long as I known him. ( He almost went to jail one day because he didn't have his wallet). Gets to the office and parks walks in and sits down to do something and realizes he needs a credit card in his wallet. Walks back out and the case is gone, but instead of immediately putting 2+2 together he doubts himself that he left it behind.

Later that day he goes to pick up the truck gets in drives home, Wife asks him if he had made the purchase with that credit card ( Vacation) No so he walks out to grab the wallet from the case in the truck just as he opens door phone rings.

Alarm company on the phone, alarm is going off at the shop.

They even got the guy on video as he calmly walks in.

Guy walksinto the shop with the alarm going off, Spent a few minutes looking around. Starts to grab a computer but the cord was to short for him to pull out, stops and tries to grab the big monitor but realizes he needs a screwdriver to remove from the stand/ wall. You could see the guy now is starting to get nervous after not really seeing anything he can grab starts to leave. Last second he stops turns and opens the file cabinet. That is usually locked at the end of the day........Didn't really matter the guy has the key anyway.

Finds the petty cash envelope and the boss mans 9mm.

and he was gone long before the cops arrived.

They went back and looked at the outdoor camera from the neighbors and saw the guy. Didn't look like a dirt bag was dressed nice almost business casual pulled in right as my boss got out of the rental car. Parked right next to him and had my boss turned right around and walked back out he still would of missed him. Gone in less then a minute.

While hedid change the locks at the house his DL was still at his old house and I guess the guy who bought that from him was not the type of guy you want to steal things from. Guess he was a retired undercover cop who spent some time in deep cover.

Well the saga continues.

Wellsfargo gets an F and it cost them a pretty penny because of it.

When I called Wellsfargo to cancel my wife's debit card I told them on the phone "My wife's purse was stolen. I need to cancel the debit card and get a new one". One would think that would be the end of. Well thats where things went wrong.

About a week and a half later my wife got a call from a Wellsfargo bank manager wanting to ask her some questions. The first being "Hi Mrs R3Meyer just confirming you are in the drive through with your DL and bank card" Um WTF no! The person was trying to deposit two checks written out to my wife with the cash back. Turns out because of covid rules you no longer need to verify any actual credentials, you just need to have an ID and the Effing bank card and they will hand you back the money if you go though the drive through. We have high standing account so it has very few restrictions. I thought great we at least have her id back and everything is fine.

NOPE

I get an email the following Sat. "Your deposits of $2600 and $2600 have been returned do to stop payments. Yup $5200 which they then pull from our account to cover the bad checks. I figured this was from when they were at the bank and the manager took my wife's ID and it was just a temp thing that would be returned.

NOPE

I got another email a few days later "Your deposit of $2850 has been returned do to stop payment. So now I am pissed. $8050 pulled from our account to cover bad checks. I go down to the bank that I deposit our company stuff at because I know the branch manager. Walk in, point through he glass at her and mouth lets chat. She makes time for me and I start to investigate what in the hell is going on. Remember when I said I called in and canceled my wife's card? Well manager informs me that they canceled my card not hers! I cant cancel her card only she can she tells me. Her card was active this whole time! You would think the brain child at the other end of the phone could maybe give me that info when i called, but NOPE.

So in the end this person tried to deposit 5 checks in total because they know how the covid rules work. Oh and those checks they were writing to my wife and cashing? You guessed it. Stolen from another person.

Wells returned my money and the manager said the branch that cashed the checks would end up eating that $8050.

This weekend cop shows up to my door with my wife's purse. Looks like its been run over about 20 times but has everything in it minus SS card, DL, and the bank card. Even the gift cards and my wife's car key are in it.

These guys were pros and know exactly how to work the system.
