Book #2 "in the can. "Thanks to Alex Lehocky, CIH, Patrick Owens, and David Krause, the 4th edition of the AIHA Odor Thresholds book will be available Friday, May 10 from AIHA. Some important updates you will find in the 4th edition:•While previous versions of this publication focused on chemicals for which published occupational exposure limits (OELs) exist, this publication identifies odor threshold data for chemicals beyond only those that have OELs.•Odor threshold values are not a single concentration that is measured, but rather a statistical value estimated by the researcher. Many of the methodologies used to determine odor thresholds include screening out anosmics, smokers, subjects with allergy or other chronic diseases, and pregnant participants prior to testing. However, these categories are represented in the workforce and in public buildings, so use of these values without understanding how they are derived can be misleading.•Odor threshold values are a tool (along with toxicity data, analytical data, and other exposure information) that can assist the IH/OEHS professional in the evaluation of an exposure situation Check out our presentation at AIHA Connect, Session E9: The Power of Odor Thresholds in Safety and HealthTue, 5/21:8:00 AM - 9:00 AM EDT.

“Safety Shift: Protecting Tomorrow"“Prevention” is sometimes overlooked or inadequately prioritized for several reasons:1. Short-Term Focus: Manufacturers and governments may prioritize short-term goals, such as cost reduction or meeting immediate demands, over long-term prevention efforts that require investment.2. Profit Motive: Businesses often aim to maximize profits, which can lead to cost-cutting measures that compromise safety and environmental considerations.3 Regulatory Gaps: Some industries may operate in regulatory gaps or with lax regulations, allowing them to avoid stringent safety and health standards.4. Lack of Awareness: In some cases, stakeholders may not fully understand the long-term benefits of prevention or the potential consequences of neglecting it.5. Political and Economic Factors: Governments may face pressures from powerful industries, affecting the stringency of regulations and enforcement. To promote safety and health through prevention, it's essential to address these challenges by advocating for stricter regulations, raising awareness, promoting responsible business practices, and fostering a culture that values prevention over short-term gains. This shift can help mitigate risks and create a safer environment for all. It's important to include organizations like the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) that play a significant role in raising awareness, advocating for better air quality, and preventing asthma and allergy-related health issues. Their contributions are vital to achieving a safer and healthier environment for everyone.

Nasal spray possibly contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia - recalled. A reminder that 1) microbiologic Quality Control (QC) of medications is vital and 2) B. cepacia is a very hardy bacterium, that survives well in liquids and environments and can pose a threat to our health if not controlled......especially dangerous to people with abnormal immune systems. Testing for this potential pathogen is quite easy, but you have to know what you're looking for. Diagnostics are critical, for both pharma QC and for infected patients. #diagnosticsispower

Our recentsystematic review and meta-analysis comprehensively summarized the relationships between pollen exposure and asthma exacerbation. We used the ROBINS-E tool to assess the risk of bias in included observational studies and applied the GRADE approach to judging our certainty from environmental exposures. In my previous post, I shared insights on clinicians' role in combating #antimicrobialresistance. In my next piece, I will discuss patients' contribution to the fight against #AMR.Patients can help fight antimicrobial resistance by being alert, knowledgeable, and proactive in their healthcare practices. There are a few ways patients can aid in this fight:1. Education and Awareness:It is important to educate patients about the appropriate use of antibiotics and to emphasize that they are not effective against viral infections such as the common cold and flu. Encouraging patients to participate in AMR awareness programs in their communities is also highly recommended.2. Adherence to Prescriptions:It is crucial for patients to complete the entire course of antibiotics, even if they start to feel better. If they do not finish the course, bacterial growth that is resistant to antibiotics can develop. Therefore, it is important for patients to strictly adhere to the recommended dosage and time guidelines.3. Communication with Healthcare Providers:Clear communication is crucial: Patients and healthcare professionals should have open, direct, and honest conversations. It is important for patients to respect the professional judgment of their healthcare provider if they advise against taking antibiotics. Seeking medical advice is vital: Patients should always consult a doctor before taking antibiotics. Antibiotics that are sold over the counter should be avoided.4. Preventive Measures:It is important to ensure that both you and your children are up-to-date on your vaccinations to prevent infections and reduce the need for antibiotics. Maintaining good hygiene can also help you avoid infections and thereby decrease the usage of antibiotics.5. Proper Disposal:It is important to properly dispose of any leftover antibiotics rather than flushing or discarding them, as this can lead to water contamination.6. Food Safety:To prevent foodborne illnesses that require antibiotics, it is crucial to handle and cook food safely to eliminate harmful bacteria.7. Advocacy and Policy Support:Patients can support government policies aimed at reducing AMR, such as restrictions on antibiotic use in agriculture.8. Community Engagement:Patients have the opportunity to engage in or endorse local initiatives that promote hygiene, good health practices, and responsible use of antibiotics. Their participation in these activities can make a significant contribution to the global effort to combat antimicrobial resistance, helping to ensure that antibiotics remain effective for future generations.
